Incomplete Surgery

Tyson's surgery was unfortunately stopped shortly after it was started this morning. After the surgeon opened up his chest, he examined his lungs and when he did his lungs were in bad shape. So, they took a specimen of the lung and had the pathologist review it very quickly in the operating room and to him, it looks like he has a viral infection of some sort. They have sent the remainder of the specimen to get a more accurate diagnosis of what type of infection he may have.

With him possibly having a viral infection, they were not able to put him on bypass because it could have been very dangerous for Tyson so, they were unable to complete the surgery. Instead, the surgeon placed a band on the Pulmonary Artery to help strengthen the artery as well as the left ventricle. By doing this it will allow more of the oxygenated blood to the rest of the body and will help wean him off the ventilator. The surgeon and doctors plan is to remove the ventilator and get him eating again before he has his surgery. It will be at least 2 weeks and as long as 6 weeks before he'll actually have the surgery. There is a possibility that if he is able to be removed from the ventilator, eating regularly and stable that he may come home before he has his surgery since it could be up to 6 weeks before he could get it.

We met with the Infectious Disease Doctor to try and figure out what this infection could be and during this time they have placed Tyson under isolation---meaning if we want to be around him we have to wear masks, gloves and gowns and unfortunately we can not allow the boys to lay together or be within about 4-5 feet of each other. We have to do this until they figure out what they are dealing with.

Tyson was brought back into his room and is handling everything very well. Originally his chest was going to still be open from surgery due to swelling, but since he was not put on bypass he didn't swell as much so, they closed his sternum and chest back up and is on his way to recovery. We are hoping that he heels quickly and the doctors are able to figure out what kind of infection he has so that we can get his little heart fixed.
